GIG REVIEW: We Went To See Little Hours Support Hudson Taylor And He Was Properly Good

Have you heard of Little Hours?

If you haven’t, we can’t help but feel that you’re seriously missing out. He’s a singer-songwriter from Ireland, and he writes the kind of beautifully-crafted acoustic love songs that make you want to consume your body weight in vodka and drunk-dial your ex. Like this one, for example – it’s his new single, it’s called Water, and we think that it’s absolutely beautiful:

He’s rather good live, too

Naturally, when we find an artist whose music we – as the youth say – ‘dig’, our first thought is that we should probably head down to our nearest independent venue and check out their live show; so, dear reader, that’s precisely what we did.

In all honesty, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect from a Little Hours live set. Would we be reduced to blubbering wrecks, and left sitting silently in a corner while thinking about everything – and anything – that had ever gone wrong here at One on One HQ? Would we be surrounded by squealing teenage Hudson Taylor fans, who only came down to the venue early to make sure that they could get to the front, but instead ended up growing hopelessly smitten with the support act and his wretched Irish charms? Heck,

Fortunately, the only thing we found out on that cold night in Bristol is that Little Hours happens to be really, really bloody good live.

This guy can seriously sing

His set may only have been half an hour long, but he managed to cram a hell of a lot of awfully good stuff into that short amount of time. We got renditions of his tracks Water and Later On – the first of which, it must be said, ranks as one of the most perfectly pleasant pop songs we’ve heard for a long, long time. We got amiable on-stage chatter. We got a shout-out for the night’s headliners. Oh, and we got an additional twenty-or-so minutes of practically perfect acoustic folk-pop music. If that’s not the template for a solid live show, what is?

You really should go and see him some time

So, if you get the chance, make sure that you head down to a Little Hours show. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll experience an entire spectrum’s worth of emotions that fall somewhere between those two extremes: but, we can guarantee that you won’t regret it.
