GIG REVIEW: We Went To A Dan Owen Show And We’re Not Quite Sure How He Isn’t A Megastar Yet

Seriously, the guy was that good

Look, we’re going to level with you here: we’ve seen Dan Owen live a bunch of times now, and yet we still can’t figure out how he isn’t a household name. We’ve seen him at festivals, where he’s somehow managed to win over each and every person in the crowd by the time he hits the last note of his set; we’ve seen him in tiny headline shows, where you can see the sweat dripping off his brow as he pummels his way through another what-the-fuck-worthy rendition of Little Red Rooster; and we’ve seen him supporting acts who are twice the size of him, but who we’re willing to bet were watching him tear up the stage and wondering how the hell they were going to follow that.

It’s only a matter of time until he hits the next level

We’re sure that he’ll get there one day, though. Seriously, we are. If there’s any justice in the world, Dan Owen will be selling out venues ten times the size of Bristol’s 140-capacity Louisiana before the decade is out. His Bristol show may have been cosy, but Dan played like he was headlining Wembley: in fact, if he gave it any more effort, we’d be genuinely concerned that he was about to have a heart attack.

Oh, and let’s not forget one minor detail here: he sounded absolutely flippin’ fantastic. Despite the fact that he was in the middle of what one might call a Bit Of A Lengthy Tour, his voice was still #onfleek, and he even managed to juggle his prodigious (and simultaneous) guitar/harmonica/kick drum/vocal performances with the odd bit of genuinely funny chit-chat in-between songs; so, we think that it’s safe to say that he’s got this whole ‘playing live’ thing nailed to a tee.

Anyway, we don’t want to ramble on, so we’ll leave you with this: dearest reader, we honestly and genuinely believe that you’d be foolish to not see Dan Owen in your nearest teensy-weensy venue the next time he comes to your town. It sounds like a bold statement, but trust us on this: he won’t be playing in them for much longer.
