The prodigious pop star lets her melodic sensibilities shine through on her stadium-sized new single, ‘Read My Mind’.
Beren Olivia’s had a busy twelve months. Over the last year, the 22-year-old has gone from zero to over 750,000 streams, multiple spins across BBC Radio 1, and a fairly healthy social media following. That’s not bad at all, really, is it?
Of course, it helps that her music is rather bloody good. Her last single, ‘History’, was a Halsey-esque slice of alt-pop perfection, and the track before that – ‘Hurts So Good’ – was as catchy (and pretty) a ditty as any we had the pleasure of hearing over the last year.
Still, if it’s an introduction to Beren Olivia that you’re looking for, then it’s her new single that we’d point you towards. It’s called ‘Read My Mind’ and it’s a mournful and explosive power-pop song that’s full of more hooks than a fisherman’s pocket.
Sonically, take The Script’s penchant for an arena-ready chorus; chuck in a handful of melodies that could’ve come straight from Hayley Williams’ voice memos; and add in a hint of Tom Walker‘s unapologetically massive pop production stylings, and you’re on the right track.
Oh, and lyrically speaking? We’ll just let Beren tell you about that herself.
“The idea for this song was sparked by a quote in one of my favourite films: ‘I thought of a million things to say to you on the plane and now I can’t remember a single thing’. That one sentence resonated with me so much. Sometimes I find it so difficult to articulate my thoughts and emotions – especially in those moments when what you desperately need is for that person just to feel things from your perspective. Simply put, sometimes, ‘I wish that you could read my mind’.”
