One on One with // Lewis Mokler

Your debut album Fingertips is out now – are you proud of it?

Yes! I’m very proud of it, it’s surpassed our expectations by reaching #6 in the iTunes singer songwriter chart so it has done very well!

What’s your favourite track on the album and why?

My favourite track on the album is Invincible, although I do keep changing my mind. It’s a song about trying to tell someone that you can’t be a superhero for them but you can love them all the same anyway.

How would you describe your music for people who don’t know you?

I’d describe my music as acoustic and chilled out songs that all have stories and meanings behind them.

Which song do you wish you had written?

Last Request by Paolo Nutini.

Who’s your ultimate icon and how have they influenced you?

Probably Paolo Nutini as well; he started off working in a fish and chip shop, and he’s a guy who got his big break when someone dropped out of a festival and he was bumped up a few slots. It just shows you how much talent is out there and it just needs that big chance for it to be noticed.

What made you get into music?

I started off busking about two and a half years ago with a friend who used to play guitar for me – it was a way to showcase my singing (which I enjoyed) as well as a way to make a little bit more money… I then was given a guitar and told to learn it! I decided that I wanted to get better at it so I started writing my own songs, from there I got more and more into it and before too long I was starting to perform at open mic nights – I was then spotted by my current manager and since then I’ve just been taking it from there.

What do you hope to do before the end of 2012?

I would like to finish the tour and still be alive to be honest! I have already done over 100 gigs this year so 150 would be nice, but we shall see.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened to you – it could be on tour, in the studio, at home, anything!

Someone delivered my paper once and asked for an autograph! It was weird because they rang the doorbell to do it. I answered, and they were like “OMG you’re Lewis Mokler! Can I have an autograph?” To be honest my Nan probably paid someone to do it, haha!

Describe yourself in three words?

He… Likes… Nutella…
