One on One with // The Enemy

This Is Real is the next single from your album – it’s been around for ages, why wasn’t it on the last album?

It’s existed in many forms for a while but it’s one of those awkward ones that takes a long time to finish. When we finally finished it in LA this year I was as much relieved as I was proud!

Your UK Tour kicks off on Friday – what’s your favourite song to play live?

At the moment I’m loving playing This Song again. It’s becoming an Enemy set essential.

What’s your favourite track on Streets In The Sky and why?

I love This Is Real. Two chords but more sentiment and personal meaning than you can shake a stick at. Properly love singing that one.

Which song do you wish you had written?

Won’t Get Fooled Again by The Who. Epic.

Who’s your ultimate icon and how have they influenced you?

I’m not big into icons. The Jaguar E Type is about the only icon I’ve ever worshipped! Oasis were a massive influence growing up though.

What made you get into music?

Listening to Led Zeppelin Two when I was a wee boy. If that doesn’t get you going nothing will!

You constantly champion unsigned bands on your Twitter page – do you think this is something more bands should do?

Totally. I also do a lot in my spare time to help them logistically and recording wise because I know how hard it is to get a band off the ground. It’s vital that established musicians do their bit if we want a constant supply of fresh new music.

Do you have any pre-show rituals to get you in the mood for the gig? What music do you play backstage?

We always warm up by playing Sit Down by James on an acoustic guitar but other than that it’s pretty relaxed – we don’t play any other music before we go on, we normally just watch the support bands and the crowd getting hyped!

What’s your favourite venue in the world?

Used to be the Astoria, but now maybe the Barrowlands up in Glasgow.

What do you hope to do before the end of 2012?

Play an amazing tour, champion some great new bands and start work on writing the next album.

You played festivals all over the place this summer – what was your highlight of the summer?

T In The Park. Best festival we’ve done by a long way. Thanks to everyone who made it so special!

What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened to the band – it could be on tour, in the studio, anything!

Not sure, all of the last six years has been completely weird. I never thought I’d be lucky enough to be doing this so I still wake up and pinch myself most days!

Describe yourself in three words?

A normal lad.
