GIG REVIEW: It Turns Out That A Barns Courtney Show Is The Primal Rock ‘n’ Roll Experience We Didn’t Know We Were Craving

He is flesh and he is bone, but he’s also really good live

It’s safe to say that Barns Courtney has had a pretty good few months. He has, for a start, managed to cram more gigs into the last year than a lot of artists manage in five. We think that it’s fair to say that he’s been on something of a hot streak as far as releases go, too; after all, anyone who’s able to release tracks as epic as 99, Sinners, and Kicks in a period of no more than eighteen months has clearly got something pretty special about them.

Oh, and throughout all of this, he’s even managed to maintain a sideline of looking drop-dead gorgeous in numerous Instagram photos. Seriously, what’s not to love about that?

We’re majorly glad that we finally caught him

What he also appears to have mastered over these last twelve months is the knack of playing an absolutely killer live show. He might have been on stage for over an hour, but Courtney and co. treated every song of the set like it might well be the last they’d ever play – and, call us old-fashioned, but we can’t help but feel like there’s something undeniably endearing about a performer who looks worryingly like he’s about to attempt a crowd-surf after only the second song of their set.

What’s even more surprising, though, is that he probably could have gotten away with it. After all, from the moment he hit the stage, he had the sold-out crowd at Bristol’s Exchange in the palm of his hand; and, by the time he was done, he’d somehow managed to contort the crowd into one big ol’ sweaty mess and make them look like they had enough energy left in the tank for him to keep going for at least another hour or so.

That, dear reader, is what we call a rock and roll show; and, if you’ve got even an ounce of sense in your body, we’re sure that you’ll be heading down to catch Barns Courtney the next time he rolls into your town.
