Yep, we’ve only gone and got another one of these
Playlists are great, aren’t they? Not only have they formed the soundtrack to all of our workdays/social gatherings/sad, lonely evenings in our bedrooms for the last however many years, but they’ve also led to us discovering some of our absolute favourite new artists.
D’you know what who else is great? Polar States. They’re a four-piece band from Liverpool, and they write the kind of scratchy-as-hell Indie anthems that’ll make you want to grab your nearest guitar and give it a go for yourself. This is their new single – it’s called Lana, it’s brilliant, and we think that you should check it out right now:
We couldn’t resist asking them for their picks
Look, we’ll level with you here: in our minds, the only thing that’s better than a good playlist is one that allows us to momentarily step inside the minds of musicians that we really, really like. So, when we found out that Polar States were up for putting together a playlist of their favourite songs for us, we couldn’t say yes quickly enough – and boy, are we glad we did, because it turned out to be a corker.
You can find the guys’ full playlist at the bottom of this page – but, for now, here they are telling you a bit about why they chose a handful of tracks from their selection:
The Chainsmokers – Sick Boy
‘It’s impossible to oversell this song. Everything about it is faultless and it made us completely re-evaluate how we arrange songs: it just keeps you guessing all the way through, which makes it feel like it’s 30 seconds long. When you consider the subject matter, that’s pretty impressive.
U2 – I Will Follow
‘We all spontaneously went to see U2 recently and ended up sat at opposite ends of the arena – we’re great at planning like that… This was one of the standouts of the night: it’s mad that they had the essence of who they were as a band nailed down so early in their career. It’s pretty special and has clearly stood the test of time.
The Post Romantics – Call It Off
‘We’re shamelessly plugging our mates here. It’s the debut single from The Post Romantics, they’re one of our favourite bands to play with, and we were actually in the studio with them when they recorded this. They’re working on a pretty special EP right now that you won’t want to miss. Get onto this!
Lana Del Rey – Video Games
‘Like a lot of artists you get into, it was because of a girl – girls must live in the future! Paul lost an entire Autumn in Lana songs and that’s what inspired the line in our single. The imagery in her lyrics is beyond aspirational. It’s only fitting to have the classic on our playlist.
Nothing But Thieves – Wake Up Call
‘Our favourite song from Nothing But Thieves‘ first album. The first time we heard it, we were driving to a festival. The chorus just jumped out, it has such an uplifting and sad feeling. It’s one of the songs that made us get in touch with our producer Larry Hibbitt, who worked on Lana and our last couple of releases.
