Gravel-Voiced Singer-Songwriter James Gillespie Has Made You A Playlist Of His Favourite Lockdown Listens

James Gillespie has got the kind of voice that you don’t forget in a hurry.

You might have seen him sharing the stage with P!nk, FaceTiming Elton John, or popping up on festival line-ups across the length and breadth of Europe.

Or, maybe, you’ve heard his new single, Rescue Me. If you have, you’ll remember it: it’s a rip-roaring burst of raw emotion, backed with production that was tailor-made for arenas, and held together by Gillespie’s unmistakable rasp. It is also Very Good Indeed.

Let’s just go ahead and say it: he’s great, isn’t it?

And, if there’s one thing we know about great musicians, it’s that they’re usually individuals of rather good taste. That’s why we asked James to put together a playlist of what he’s been listening to while we’ve all been stuck indoors; and, why we weren’t surprised at all when he came back with a veritable plethora of stellar songs.

You can find James’ full playlist at the bottom of the page – but, for now, why not read on and learn why he chose a few of the tracks?

Frank Ocean – Pink + White

‘Anything by Frank Ocean is just a vibe. I love his lyrics, sound and whole vibe – he’s a big inspiration.

Allan Rayman – 27

‘Allan has been a massive inspiration to me ever since I saw him live for the first time in London. If you have ever seen a live performance of his, you will know exactly what I’m talking about.

Justin Bieber ft. Quavo – Intentions

‘I don’t care what anyone says – this is a fucking tune.

Rhys Lewis – No Right To Love You

‘This is one of those songs I wish I wrote myself. If I close my eyes and listen to it, I can trick myself into thinking I wrote it…

Matt Maeson – Cringe

‘I have checked out every single song from his recent album and there isn’t one song that isn’t an absolute banger.

Wretch 32 – His & Hers (Perspectives)

‘I don’t need to explain why this song is on the list – just listen to it. It’s absolute genius.
