Melancholy Indie Boys newfamiliar Have Made You A Playlist Of Their Favourite Songs

The hotly-tipped three-piece delivers a stellar playlist of indie, soul, and rock classics.

You’ve heard of newfamiliar, haven’t you? They’re the British band whose pensive and introspective take on conventional indie-rock music has won them acclaim from the likes of One on One’s Danny Angove and One on One’s Leah Davies.

Imagine a band setting out to deliver a more contemporary take on Travis, but then throwing in a handful of Morrissey’s dejected lyrical musings. Oh, and then deciding to toss in an ear for a hook that comes straight from the Snow Patrol playbook.

That, dear reader, is the recipe for newfamiliar.

They don’t half know how to compile a playlist, too.

If there’s one thing we know about great bands, it’s that they usually have pretty good taste. That’s why we asked newfamiliar to make us a playlist of their favourite songs: and why we weren’t surprised in the slightest when it turned out to be a corker.

You can find the band’s full playlist at the bottom of the page – but until you get there, why not scroll down and find out precisely why the guys chose a handful of the tracks in their lovingly curated selection?

Black Pumas – Colors

‘We first heard about this band when we were in Austin and met Eric (Burton, Black Pumas‘ guitarist and vocalist), and he told us about a project he’d just started working on, and played us this song. Fast forward a couple of years and he releases one of our favourite albums ever!’

The Beatles – In My Life

‘I love how within the lyrics of this song, it speaks of past love, and while not dismissing that it is part of you, nothing compares to the situation you find yourself in at that moment. It’s an interesting commentary on perspective.’

Paolo Nutini – Better Man

‘What a voice. What a meaning. Such simple ideas delivered so well!’

Angie Stone – Wish I Didn’t Miss You

‘The beat alone is enough to get this song on our list, but coupled with her attitude and insane vocal tone, it’s a song we’ve spent A LOT of time listening to.’

.Leon Bridges – River

‘The coolest sound in modern music, I think. So relaxed, and so old-school without sounding dated’

Like what you’re hearing? Well, you’re in luck – newfamiliar have only gone and put together a full flippin’ playlist for you. Sit back, relax, and enjoy:
