Stripping back an already delicate piece, Ed Wallis of Green Rays delivers an expertly crafted Selfie Session.
Previously unreleased, ‘Run’ is one of those songs that you’ll somehow listen to a hundred times in a row without noticing. The feeling it gives you won’t fade away, but merely surround you, like that shockingly comfy chair that you sink way too far into at your nan’s house.
Although the melancholic tone is unavoidable, this track doesn’t evoke sadness, but represents that strange place of limbo just before moving forwards. It’s tough not to sense that the layers of emotion behind this song are deeply rooted.
With a soothing tone that you can’t quite put your finger on, ‘Run’ is reminiscent of regaining feeling after being numb. You know the one we mean – that stinging feeling, which can only mean you’re healing.
But why take our word for it? This is what Ed has to say about ‘Run’:
‘’Run’ is the first single from my new project, Green Rays. I always wanted ‘Run’ to be the first song that saw the light of day. For a while now my music has been about seeing how far you can stretch simple melodies, giving them space to breathe and unfurl in their own way. That space is something I’ve been seeking in my own life after a difficult few years. So sonically and thematically, ‘Run’ holds a mirror to where I’m at: restless waters, but hopeful prospects.’
And now, for the main event.
Much like blankly staring out of a train window, this is the song you’d play to find solace in a restless world. As the wind relentlessly batters the glass protecting you, and the blurred shapes of an unrecognisable world whistle past, it may seem impossible to find steady ground.
Thankfully, it’s tracks like ‘Run’ that gives us a moment to breathe. Nice one, Ed.
